Tyre Safety Tips

  • Tyre Selection

    The choice of a tyre that does not strictly conformto the original equipment specifications for a particular bike must be validated by a professional technician.

    Never use a tyre that is not inflated to the correct pressure, in excess of its indicated speed rating, or with a load that exceeds its load index.

    Inspection

    Tyres must be inspected on a routine basis for irregularwear patterns, which can be an indication of incorrect inflation pressure, overloading or mechanical problems. An underinflated or overloaded tyre that is ridden for a prolonged period may suffer irreversible damage that can have serious consequences, even if the tyre is returned to correct inflation pressure.

    Tyres should be inspected regularly, with particular attention paid to:

    • the tread area, to detect the presence of debris, cuts, deterioration or irregular wear patterns;
    • sidewalls, to detect impact damage (from potholes or kerbs), cuts, cracking or abnormal deformation;
    • the bead area, noting any trace of abrasions or rim damage.
    • If you suspect any problems, your tyres should be inspected internally and externally by a professional technician.
  • Wear

    The primary function of the tread is adhesion with the road. As tyre wear progresses over time, the tyre's ability to evacuate water deteriorates; consequently, you should reduce speed on wet roads. Remember to check regularly for tyre wear, by observing tread depth and uniformity of the wear pattern.

    These indicators are small raised areas at the bottom of the grooves of the tread pattern.

    If the surface of the rubber is at the level of these raised areas, the tyre is most likely very close to the safe limit, or could even be below it.

    Factors affecting wear: A tyre's durability is dependent on several major factors.

    • Some are within the rider's control, such as inflation pressure, loads carried, vehicle speed and riding style (braking and acceleration).
    • Others are beyond the rider's control, and require adaptation of one's riding style: frequency of corners, type of road surface, ambient temperature.

    Remember that mechanical problems can also cause premature wear, including warped rims, worn suspension components, loose steering head bearings and/or frame misalignment.

    Any one of these factors can have a detrimental effect on tread life; a combination of several factors will cause significant wear.

    Inflation

    Tips on Air Pressure

    Michelin recommend checking tyre pressure at least once every fortnight when cold( a tyre that has not run for at least 2 hours or has run for less than 3 km at a reduced speed).

    • Checking inflation pressure of the tyre after longer running is best avoided. If not, follow OE recommendation/ add 4 PSI to the OE recommended cold pressure.
    • Always respect the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
    • Michelin recommend use of dry air( Clear of moisture, dust etc), however use of nitrogen does not have any negative impact on tyre performance.
    • After checking the tyre pressure, do not forget to replace the valve cap, which in addition to protecting valve core against dust, also act as secondary air seal.

    Know your bike’s tyre pressure

    • Every vehicle comes with OE pressure recommendation sticker and it should be respected.
    • One can find pressure sticker at either of these locations on a bike: near chain sprocket (Stay) or on the fuel tank.
    • Generally OE recommends two different recommendations for inflation pressure:-
      • Rider( without Pillion)
      • Rider+ Pillion
    • One must adjust the pressure accordingly as per use.
  • Mounting / Balancing / Demounting

    Mounting

    • The fitter must inspect the tyre and wheel thoroughly (Inside and outside).
    • Compliance with motorcycle and tyre manufacture specification should be ensured.
    • The rim must be clean and in good condition( free of dust).
    • Make sure the tyre and wheel are matching. Never fit TL tyre on TT wheel.
    • Replace valve during change of tyres.
    • Lubricant all the inner parts of the rim and the bead of the tyres, on both sides, with a suitable lubricant.
    • Observer the rolling direction indicated by an arrow on one side of the sidewall.
    • Perform bead to rim mounting 8 using suitable levers and finishing at the location just ahead of valve.
    • Inflate without valve core, and without interruption, until the beads are well seated on the rim.
    • Continue inflation up to 3.5 bar (51 psi) for a proper bead seating.
    • Replace the valve core, inflate to the recommended pressure and screw the valve cap.

    Demounting

    • Unscrew the valve and allow the tyre to deflate completely.
    • Break the seal between the tyre breads and the rim.
    • Lubricant the rim and bread.
    • Remove the tyre using two tyres levers.

    Repairs

    In the event of a puncture, only a professional tyre dealer has the expertise to conduct the internal and external inspections necessary to determine whether the tyre is repairable.

  • Break-in

    During the first 100km of operation after new tyres have been installed, the motorcycle should be ridden at moderate speed, and cornering angles should be increased progressively, until the tyre reaches its optimal performance.

    Warm-up

    Mushroom Repair

    It is a professional way of repairing a tyre and id being done using mushroom patch and special toll-kit, it is also called as inside - out repair.

    The repair is recommended by Michelin because of the following reasons:-

    • It seals the injury completely thus restores the original performance of the tyres.
    • The repair ensures to have complete interior inspection of a tyre to check the any possible sign of damage from inside as the tyre needs to be de-mounted from the rim to carry out this repair.
  • Mixing Tyres

    All recommendations and precautions are based on equipping the motorcycle with MICHELIN tyres both front and rear.

    Unless specifically recommended by Michelin, bias-ply and radial tyres should not be combined on one motorcycle, to prevent unstable handling.

    Handling & Storage

    Tyres must be stored in dry, ventilated and temperature-controlled conditions, protected fromdirect sunlight and inclement weather.

    • Away from all chemicals, solvents or hydrocarbons, which can adversely affect the rubber mixture.
    • Away from sharp objects that can puncture the tyre, including metal, wood or other potential hazards.
    • Away from heat sources or electrical devices.
